Frequently asked questions

Do you have a set curriculum?
We do not follow a boxed curriculum. We focus heavily on current events, teachable moments and high interest materials. When something happens, a child has a question, or shows an interest, we have the freedom to pull the best resources we can find and follow the path until their curiosity is solved. We are experts at child development, the way the brain learns, the natural progression of learning to read, write and complete math tasks. We take children at face value irregardless of age. We assess their current level, or abilities, and determine what they would need for the next steps. We believe in guiding them naturally and using play as much as possible.
What is the daily schedule like?
We are very flexible. Our activities change regularly but we stick to a loose daily schedule meaning that times may be pushed a few minutes if the children appear to be ready to move on or if they wish to stay involved because they are really engaged.
Our day basically goes like this...We come in and have free play from 8-8:40. We clean up, discuss the calendar/season/date/, and we share a seasonal/topic appropriate read aloud. We have snack from 9:00 to 9:20. We clean up and move into a STEM/art/sensory/math or reading game or project. At 10:00 we clean up and head to the playroom for free play. At 11 we clean up, wash up and head to lunch. Then it's more free play. 12:00 is rest time for the little ones and a free choice brain break activity for the older kids. Some kids have lessons while the littles rest. After rest time we have another snack and more free play.
**free play is alternated between our outdoor playground and our indoor play areas depending on weather.

What does snack consist of?
We alternate snacks but the main focus is fruits and vegetables paired with crackers, cheese and yogurt. We use mealtimes to discuss how our food is grown, all of our senses such as touch, smell and taste. We compare the foods and who likes which ones. Meal times are very conversational and include teachable moments whenever possible.
How do you handle all the different age groups?
We meet as a large group for story, calendar, art, science and free play. Individual tutoring, or higher leveled instruction, occurs in the afternoon when the smaller children are resting. We find that the older children enjoy working in the afternoon because by then they have already had 3 opportunities for free play so it easier for them to focus.
